Over 25 years of Putin’s rule, Russia has half as many hospitals. The country is short nearly 87,000 medical workers.
These are the consequences of “optimization” and years of state austerity in healthcare. For years, the authorities have been cutting medical staff, closing and merging hospitals, reducing the number of beds, and making medical care increasingly inaccessible.
In the draft budget for 2027, federal healthcare spending is being cut again. Because the Kremlin’s top priority is not Russians’ lives, but the war—a war for which Russians are paying, both directly and indirectly, with their health and their lives.
