Schoolgirl Anna Zhuravleva removed from the list of “terrorists and extremists” (yes, that happens!)

Just a couple of weeks ago, we told the story of Anna Zhuravleva: she was detained at 14 and accused under a “terrorism” article. The schoolgirl was abused by her cellmates in the pretrial detention centre: raped, beaten and humiliated. Security officials knew about the torture but did not intervene.

At the time, we asked people to support Team Against Torture’s fundraiser for Anya’s lawyer, and yesterday we received good news: Anya was removed from the list of “terrorists and extremists”!

Lawyer Pyotr Khromov, speaking to Takie Dela, suggests that this may have been connected to the case being transferred to the Investigative Committee’s central office. In his words, they “understood the absurdity of the accusation” there.

What is known about Anna Zhuravleva

The teenager was detained in November 2023 and spent more than a year and a half in pretrial detention. Investigators believed that the schoolgirl belonged to the movement “Columbine,” which has been designated terrorist, and was preparing an attack on a school. Among the evidence was a video in which she sets off a firecracker in a vacant lot, although an examination established that the firecracker was not an explosive device.

In June 2025, Anna was released under a recognizance not to leave. Later, a criminal case was opened against three of her former cellmates for abuse and violent sexual acts.
