Former Communist Party State Duma deputy Oleg Mikhailov remanded in custody
Oleg Mikhailov was detained in Moscow after a vacation, and the Basmanny District Court remanded him in pretrial detention until December 21.
Mikhailov is accused of making public calls for terrorism, justifying it, or promoting it online. The Communist Party believes the reason may have been his 2024 post about sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky.
State Duma deputy Yury Sinełshchikov noted that security officials went after Mikhailov only after he had lost his parliamentary mandate:
“Law enforcement officers sat and waited for a person to lose deputy status, and then to arrange for him… Well, perhaps I am rushing to use the word ‘reprisal,’ but to arrange, so to speak, an investigation.”
Who is Oleg Mikhailov
Mikhailov heads the Communist Party in Komi and until recently was a State Duma deputy. He took part in protests against a landfill at Shiyes, and was repeatedly fined because of public demonstrations.
In the September 2026 State Duma elections, Mikhailov lost his mandate. During the campaign, he openly spoke in favour of peace, including during televised debates.
