Russia and Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire in the area of Oleshky from October 29, mediated by Melania Trump, the White House says
“First Lady Melania Trump has successfully secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine within the city of Oleshky. Both countries agreed to temporarily halt all military operations in Oleshky in order to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and prepare the evacuation of civilians through a specially designated safe corridor.”
The agreement applies only to a limited section of the fighting and does not provide for a ceasefire along the entire front line.
Oleshky is located in the Russian-controlled part of Kherson Oblast. The city has found itself virtually on the line of contact: its approaches are mined, and the airspace is controlled by drones, which is why no food or medicine has been delivered there for about six months. At the same time, around 2,000 civilians remain in the city.
On October 16, the Holy See press office reported that the pope had spoken with Putin by phone: he called for a ceasefire in order to deliver humanitarian aid to the city of Oleshky and also ensure the “voluntary and safe evacuation” of civilians.
A Ceasefire Reaches One City
Fighting in Oleshky will pause for aid and evacuation.
The city had waited six months for food and medicine.
