“They shocked his face with electricity and hung him by his legs.” The girlfriend of an Izhevsk activist recounted how he was tortured

Darya Bagina, the girlfriend of Izhevsk activist Dmitry Morozov, wrote about what happened to him on the day of his detention.

“During the detention, he was beaten, shocked with electricity in the face, ribs, and legs, and hung by his legs in handcuffs. Dmitry did not even see the faces of his torturers: a black bag wrapped in tape was put over his head. After prolonged torture, they continued kicking him,”

Bagina wrote.

According to her, they tried to force Morozov to confess to financing Ukraine and banned terrorist and extremist organizations.

“They failed — Dmitry has never done anything like that,”

the activist’s girlfriend added.

Morozov has bruised ribs, his arms hurt, he has difficulty breathing, and he also shows signs of a concussion, Bagina said. His relatives, journalists, and members of the public saw marks of the beatings on his face in court.

Dmitry Morozov’s case

➡️ Morozov was detained on the evening of October 2, and on the morning of the following day he was brought home for a search. According to Bagina, security forces inspected only two places, and from one of them they themselves pulled out a package containing mephedrone. This discovery became the basis for a criminal case on drug possession.

➡️ On October 5, a court sent Morozov to pretrial detention for two months. His relatives link his prosecution to his activities after the State Duma elections: Morozov sought to hold a rally in Izhevsk against election violations, and a court ruled that the city administration’s refusal to approve the event was unlawful.

The Confession Could Not Survive the Investigation

The activist was allegedly tortured for a confession.

When evidence fails, torture remains.
