The Serbian opposition that won the election does not intend to impose sanctions on Russia

Jovo Bakić, a sociologist and representative of the “Student List,” which won Serbia’s parliamentary elections, said in an interview with RT Balkan, the Serbian branch of the propaganda media holding, that the movement does not intend to impose sanctions on Russia.

“We respect Russia both as a great power and as a historically important partner for us, and in many cases, as a protector. There will be no changes on this issue. Sanctions imposed by small Serbia against Russia would change nothing, but symbolically they would be very bad,” Bakić said.

Earlier, former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who lost the parliamentary election, said that if the opposition won, it would change its position and impose sanctions on Moscow as early as March–April 2027.

Bakić also commented on the future of energy cooperation with Russia amid pressure from the European Union. According to Bakić, decisions in this area should be made based on Serbia’s interests.

“We are not here to please foreigners; we are here to act in our national interests,” he said.

🔵According to a preliminary Ipsos/CeSID estimate, the “Student List” won 53% of the vote and may receive 141 of 250 seats in parliament. Vučić’s United Serbia bloc received 38.8% of the vote and 103 mandates. Thus, the student movement has enough mandates to form a government on its own. Vučić conceded defeat.

Victory Without Changing the Convenient Course

The winning Student List will not impose sanctions on Russia.

New government, same symbolic fear.
