The Vologda governor wants to place a mural of Beria in Cherepovets
He published an image featuring Lavrentiy Beria, Felix Dzerzhinsky, and Anatoly Lunacharsky on his Telegram channel.
“Such a mural design in Cherepovets has been proposed by employees of the city administration. We will consider it,” wrote Vologda Oblast head Georgy Filimonov. The mural is planned to be placed next to the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant.
A controlling stake in the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant belongs to billionaire Alexey Mordashov, who previously had a prolonged conflict with Filimonov.
🔵In 2000, the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation refused to rehabilitate Beria and a number of his associates. The court said that Beria and his associates were “direct perpetrators of terror,” as a result of which “thousands of citizens suffered innocently.”
🔵Dzerzhinsky was one of the creators of the Soviet state-security bodies and the founder of the Cheka, the NKVD’s predecessor. Under him, the Red Terror unfolded: mass arrests and extrajudicial executions. Beria headed the NKVD from 1938 to 1945. He was arrested in 1953, convicted on charges including treason and terrorism, and executed by shooting.
🔵In 2024, Filimonov announced the installation of monuments to Stalin and Ivan the Terrible in Vologda.
