In the summer, Putin spoke by phone with Macron, but the conversation “yielded no results” and was not made public — Reuters source

A source close to the Kremlin told the agency this while commenting on a conversation between Vladimir Putin, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

According to the Reuters source, French President Emmanuel Macron was the last leader of a European Union country to speak with Putin by phone. The conversation took place in July 2026, was not made public, and yielded no results.

The agency’s source also said that Putin told Stubb and Støre that Russia would not compromise on the issue of seizing the entire territory of Donbas. In response, the European politicians stressed the need to achieve a “just” peace, the Reuters source added.

🔴Earlier, Stubb and Støre spoke with Putin by phone. Stubb called the conversation “direct and substantive.”

🔵The Kremlin said that during the phone call Putin “assessed the current situation in the conflict zone,” recalling what he considers the “root causes” of the war.

🔵Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy added that Stubb and Støre “clearly told” Putin that real de-escalation steps regarding Ukrainian energy and infrastructure were necessary.

A Secret Call, Predictable Result

Putin’s summer call with Macron produced no results.

Secrecy at least preserved the zero result.
