The grim collection of mercenaries from exotic countries killed in Ukraine has been replenished by an Indonesian citizen.
Forty-eight-year-old Taufiq Muhammad, a native of the city of Sorong, worked as a taxi driver in Jakarta and as a manager at an agricultural company. He had work experience in the United States and spoke English. Why he decided to look for work specifically in Russia remains unclear.
It is known that Russian recruiters found Taufiq’s résumé and offered him a high-paying job. On April 19, 2026, the Indonesian signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defence in Korolyov, near Moscow. Muhammad was made a machine gunner and sent to a training ground, where he spent only a week and a half. By early May, his unit had already been transferred to the front.
As is usually the case with mercenaries, Taufiq was killed during his first battle near the settlement of Zelena Dolyna in Donetsk Oblast. The Indonesian’s fate became known only when his documents and personal belongings came into the possession of Ukrainian intelligence.
The Russian military does not care much about preserving foreign personnel. “Non-Russians” are usually expendable material, who can be sent into battle even without weapons. As of early 2026, we know the names of more than 5 thousand dead foreigners who fought as part of the Russian army. Their actual number is far greater.
