Five laptops at 120,000 rubles each—that is exactly how much the commanders valued the life of a Russian IT specialist caught in the trap of a “UAV contract”.

A developer from Chelyabinsk named Nikolai created software for state institutions at a large IT company. He was not short of money, but at one point suddenly wanted to go to the “special military operation.” He decided that he wanted to become a UAV operator in order to “benefit society.”

At the beginning of June this year, the man voluntarily signed that very “UAV contract” and ended up in the 1437th Motor Rifle Regiment without any training whatsoever. The unit is known for its losses, a butcher of a commander, extortion, torture, and extrajudicial executions of personnel—the full “gentleman’s set” of the Russian army. There, Nikolai did “household work” in the rear for some time, then served as a clerk, but still did not escape the fate of most Russian infantrymen.

“One fine day, he called from someone else’s number and said he was being sent on a combat mission and wanted to say goodbye… I said, how can that be, did they teach you anything at all? What mission are they sending you on? He replied that he did not know and, honestly, began to cry. That was it—the connection was cut off,” Nikolai’s wife Irina said.

A few days later, Irina found emails in her husband’s inbox from the Ozon marketplace about Nikolai ordering five laptops, each costing 120,000 rubles. In her opinion, he did not place the order; the money was stolen by one of the commanders—someone had been using his phone and reading his chats after Nikolai had already been sent on the combat mission.

Later, the woman received a notification that her husband had gone missing on September 28 “while carrying out tasks during the special military operation.” Irina’s appeals to the prosecutor’s office, the Ministry of Defence, and the Investigative Committee produced no result.

Read all the details of this “wonderful” story here. And remember: a “UAV contract” is no different from an “ordinary” contract with the Russian army. You signed a contract with the Russian army—you end up in assaults. You end up in assaults—you are almost 100% dead.
