“I spent time in a penal colony, while he played video games and got married several times. Mommy’s little knight, I guess.” Roman Protasevich’s former girlfriend Sofia Sapegagave an extensive interview
In May 2021, Belarusian security services forced a Ryanair flight carrying Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega to land in Minsk. Protasevich was the former editor-in-chief of Nexta, a Telegram channel covering the protests. Sapega was an administrator of the Telegram channel Black Book of Belarus, which published the personal data of security officers involved in violence against protesters. The couple were detained. Both cooperated with investigators and avoided the lengthy sentences they faced, but took different paths. Protasevich defected to Alexander Lukashenko’s side. Moscow intervened on behalf of Sapega, a Russian citizen. Unlike Protasevich, Sapega tried to stay out of the spotlight and spent about a year in a penal colony before her release.
More than five years later, she gave an extensive interview to Zerkalo. It is divided into two parts, the first of which was published today. Meduza has collected the most interesting quotes from it.
