An Armenian-born man has been sentenced to 9.5 years in Russia over comments on Armenian websites

Gevorg Grigoryan, a 23-year-old citizen of Russia and Armenia who lived in the Transbaikal region, was tried on charges of spreading military “fake news,” rehabilitating Nazism, and calling for “terrorism” and “extremism,” an acquaintance who asked to remain anonymous told Mediazona.

Grigoryan had been under house arrest since June 2025. According to Mediazona’s source, the criminal case was prompted by anti-Russian comments on Armenian websites. In them, he wrote that “Hitler should have exterminated them all” and that “after Ukraine, [Russian troops] will enter Armenia.” Grigoryan’s acquaintance says the young man wrote the comments in anger over Russia’s failure to help Armenia in the 2023 war over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The prosecutor had requested a 10-year prison sentence. The defendant’s family, his acquaintance says, hoped until the very end that he would avoid prison time. Grigoryan admitted guilt and expressed remorse, the acquaintance added.

A prison sentence measured in comments

Grigoryan received nine and a half years; an acquaintance said the case stemmed from online comments.

The court gave words nearly a decade.
